Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions

Real answers to the questions I hear most about functional nutrition, root-cause care, and how healing works.

Understanding the approach

What is functional nutrition?

Functional nutrition asks why. Instead of stopping at “here’s a pill for that symptom,” it looks at how your body’s systems are working together (digestion, hormones, blood sugar, detox pathways, the immune system) and where things have gotten out of balance.

Your symptoms are information. They’re your body’s way of telling us something needs attention, and functional nutrition takes that message seriously.

What is integrative nutrition?

Integrative means we bring it all together. Good science, whole foods, lifestyle, targeted supplements when needed, and the care you may already be receiving from your doctor all work side by side.

You don’t have to choose between conventional medicine and a natural approach. Each does something different well, and I help you see how they fit together for you.

What does “root cause” actually mean?

Picture a tree. The symptoms you feel are the branches. You can keep trimming branches, but if the roots are unhealthy, they’ll keep growing back.

Bloating, fatigue, skin flares, and mood swings are the branches. I love to start with food as medicine to cut down the branches so you feel some relief, while we dig for the root cause.

That way you’re not waiting months to feel better, and we’re not just covering up the problem.

Is this different from seeing my regular doctor?

Yes, and it’s meant to complement that care, not replace it. Conventional medicine is a gift for acute care, emergencies, and diagnosis. But a typical appointment isn’t built for spending hours tracing the why behind everyday symptoms.

That’s the space I work in. Whether you have a medical team you love or you’re striking out on your own, I meet you where you are.

How healing works

How do our cells play a part in how we feel?

Every part of you (your skin, your brain, your gut lining, your hormones) is built from cells, and each cell is like a tiny house that needs three things:

  • Good building materials. Your cell walls are made largely of fats, so the quality of the fats you eat literally becomes part of you.
  • Fuel and power. Inside each cell are mitochondria, the little “power plants” that turn food into energy. When they’re under-nourished or overwhelmed, you feel it as fatigue and brain fog.
  • A way to take out the trash. Cells produce waste every day. If that waste can’t leave efficiently, it builds up and gets in the way of healing.

When your cells are well fed and able to clear waste, your whole body works better. That’s why nutrition matters so much: you are what you can absorb and process.

What does “drainage first” mean?

Before we ask your body to release or detox anything, we make sure the exits are open.

Think of a clogged sink. You wouldn’t turn the faucet on full blast before clearing the drain.

We start by supporting your body’s natural drainage pathways (digestion and elimination, liver, lymph, kidneys, skin) so healing feels gentler and more sustainable.

How long will it take to feel better?

Healing has an order and a timeline, and your body has an amazing ability to rebound, renew, and rebuild.

Think about a broken leg in a cast. That season can feel slow, but the cast isn’t a setback. It’s what makes the healing possible. Underneath, your body is quietly rebuilding, and one day the cast comes off and you’re moving freely again.

Many people notice changes within the first few weeks, while deeper root-cause work unfolds over a few months. Every body is different, and I’ll walk with you through each stage.

Will I have to give up all the foods I love?

This isn’t a restrictive, “never again” plan. But it’s also not a coffee-shop menu where you get whatever you want, however you want it, every time.

Food as medicine means choosing what truly nourishes you in this season of healing. Some foods may take a break while your body repairs, and many come back once you’re in a stronger place. And we’ll find plenty of delicious things to add along the way.

Do I have to take a lot of supplements?

It depends on where you are in your healing. Food and lifestyle are always the foundation, and supplements are chosen with a specific purpose.

During certain phases, like a targeted protocol to clear an overgrowth or infection, you may take several supplements at once. That’s intentional and temporary, with a clear plan and an end point. As your body heals, we step back down to only what you need to stay well.

The goal is always to help your body do its own work.

Working with me

What kinds of testing do you use?

Depending on your needs, I may recommend functional blood work, food sensitivity panels, or other functional testing. Testing gives us objective data to pair with your symptoms and story, so we’re not guessing.

See Annual Functional Blood Testing to learn why I recommend yearly bloodwork.

Do you work with people outside of San Diego?

Yes! I see clients in San Diego County and through telehealth, so you can work with me from home.

Do you work with pregnant women and families?

Absolutely. Supporting women and couples from pre-conception through pregnancy and postpartum is one of my favorite parts of this work.

How do I get started?

Book a free discovery call. We’ll talk about what’s going on, what you’re hoping for, and whether working together is a good fit. No pressure, just a conversation.

Still have questions?

Let’s talk. A free discovery call is the easiest way to see if we’re a good fit.
